FIFA bans Luis Suarez for four months, fined $112,000
Uruguay and Liverpool forward, Luiz Suarez has been banned for four months from all football related activities by FIFA for biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini during the Uruguay-Italy match played on June 24th.FIFA's disciplinary committee released a statement on their website stating this. "The player Luis Suárez is regarded as having breached art. 48 par. 1 lit. d of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC) (assault), and art. 57 of the FDC (an act of unsporting behaviour towards another player).
· The player Luis Suárez is to be suspended for nine (9) official matches. The first match of this suspension is to be served in the upcoming FIFA World Cup fixture between Colombia and Uruguay on 28 June. The remaining match suspensions shall be served in Uruguay’s next FIFA World Cup match(es), as long as the team qualifies, and/or in the representative team’s subsequent official matches in accordance with art. 38 par. 2a) of the FDC. Continue...· The player Luis Suárez is banned from taking part in any kind of football-related activity (administrative, sports or any other) for a period of four (4) months in accordance with art. 22 of the FDC.
· A stadium ban is pronounced against the player Luis Suárez in accordance with art. 21 of the FDC as follows: the player Luis Suárez is prohibited from entering the confines of any stadium during the period of the ban (point 3). The player Luis Suárez is prohibited from entering the confines of any stadium in which the representative team of Uruguay is playing while he has to serve the nine-match suspension (point 2).
· The player Luis Suárez is ordered to pay a fine in the amount of CHF 100,000 ($112,000).
The decision was notified to the player and the Uruguayan FA today.
“Such behaviour cannot be tolerated on any football pitch, and in particular not at a FIFA World Cup when the eyes of millions of people are on the stars on the field. The Disciplinary Committee took into account all the factors of the case and the degree of Mr Suárez’s guilt in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Code. The decision comes into force as soon it is communicated,” said Claudio Sulser, chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee.

Boko Haram attacks military post, kills 16 soldiers, abducts some
Dozens of suspected members of Boko Haram sect on Tuesday June 24th carried out a deadly attack on a military post in Bulabulin Ngaura in Damboa LGA of Borno killing 16 soldiers, Punch reports.
According to one of the soldiers who escaped and spoke on anonymity to journalists, he said the sect men came in 30 vehicles mounted with anti-aircraft guns, caught them unawares and subdued them
"We were totally subdued by the insurgents. Some of my colleagues were abducted and many others escaped with bullet wounds. Dozens of Boko Haram insurgents stormed our checkpoint at Bulabulin on Tuesday night. The terrorists came in a convoy of over 30 vehicles, mounted with Anti Aircraft guns (AA). I was at the checkpoint when the terrorists came, we tried our best but they had advantage over us. They had AA and we had Ak47 rifles that are not fully loaded. When we realized that they had taken over the place, some of us escaped to Maiduguri and other places but many could not make it. As I am talking to you, 16 bodies of our colleagues have been brought to Maiduguri, this is apart from those that sustained injuries and many others that are missing.” he said
Chris Brown rejects plea deal in D.C case, heads for trial
Chris Brown has tasted jail and no longer seems afraid of it. He was in Washington D.C yesterday for his assault trial and rejected a plea deal with prosecutors...and now he's headed for trial.
TMZ reports that Chris was close to copping a plea but the deal fell apart because the prosecutor and Chris' lawyer couldn't agree on a statement of fact about the events leading to the alleged assault.
Chris has always denied assaulting a fan in 2013 outside a hotel in D.C. If he'd pled guilty, he would not have to serve any additional time in jail. Now that he's going to trial, jail time is on the line again. His bodyguard has already been convicted of the assault. A trial date has been set for September.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION: The Salon Global University Student Video Competition is organized by Salon Films (H.K.) Ltdin the framework of the last year of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD, 2005-2014), coordinated by UNESCO. The competition is supported by the Hong Kong Baptist University in partnership with UNESCO.
ELIGIBILITY: University students from all over the world can participate in the competition.

To achieve sustainable development, political regulations and financial incentives are not enough. A fundamental change is necessary in the way people think and act. The international community has long recognized that education is crucial for bringing about such change. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) allows learners to acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values necessary to shape a sustainable future. ESD means including key sustainable issues into teaching and learning; for example, climate change, disaster risk reduction, biodiversity, poverty reduction, and sustainable consumption.In December 2002, the United Nations’ General Assembly launched the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development running from 2005-2014. PRIZE: The video author (or a nominated representative, if a team effort) of each winning video will be invited to attend the UNESCO ESD Youth Conference on 7 November 2014 in Okayama, Japan and also the UNESCO World Conference on ESD in Nagoya, Japan from 10 to 12 November 2014. Travel costs to and from Japan, hotel accommodation and a living allowance will be provided for the duration of stay in Japan. A trophy will also be awarded to the winner.
HOW TO APPLY: Complete the registration form that can be downloaded by clicking here: English/ 中文 and seek their university’s support. The completed form with university endorsement should be emailed to the following email address: registration@salonmedia.com. The video should be submitted on a DVD and sent by post to the following address together with the original registration form: Salon Films (H.K.) BRIEF DESCRIPTION: Japan must look to the past and build the future. As it continues to recover from the devastation of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, it is also preparing for the 2020 Tokyo Olympiad. Strong currents of change are flowing through Japan and the wider world, the country faces many questions and must make choices, some of them tough. We ask our essayists to consider today’s Japan, and to explain and share their views on three points. :
- What does Japan need to reform, and what should it protect and preserve?
- As a country, What kind of message should Japan be sending to the rest of the world?
- What does the world expect of Japan?
ELIGIBILITY: Young researchers engaged in Japanese studies. Assistants or trainees at research institutions, art galleries, museums, etc., who are either enrolled in or who have completed a doctoral program at the time of application. Lecturers, assistants and associate professors at universities who have yet to obtain tenure.Entry is open to all non-Japanese citizens. The object of the contest is to promote Japanese studies overseas.

COOL FM Freeze fires at Etcetera
Last Saturday, singer turned writer Etcetera wrote an article titled 'On-Air-Personalities, you have killed radio' where he criticized OAPs saying all they do is glorify celebs, recycle their music, chase fame and fake accents, amongst other things (read it here). Well, one of the OAP's has replied him.
